Almost to the point where you could build a decent gaming pc and also a used MacBook. The problem with that is after a brand new computer and a brand new eGPU your really getting up there in price. You could also wait and see what else comes out but. eGPU son sierra are still iffy from what I've heard.
If you're getting a new computer I think it would be easiest to get the officially supported developer kit thing with the amd and native support. CS:GO and TF2 we're barely playable without it, now they run just fine. With the eGPU I can run it (in windows) at retina resolution and medium graphics. Without the eGPU I could run civ 6 on minimum graphics and 1080p.

I have a 2015 MacBook Pro 15" and a akitio node + gtx1050ti using a tb3=>tb2 adaptor. I am not much of a computer person so trying to figure out what was the problem and what would it wouldn't break my computer was frustrating. I just got my eGPU setup working after a few months of fiddling with it.
